Preparing and submitting your images The look of a photo-engraved product is dependant on the quality of the images that are supplied to us for incorporation into the design. If the original image is too small, unclear or damaged it will be difficult to deliver a fine result. To ensure that your images are usable please consider the the following points. Supplying digital images We accept most image formats but the following are most common - TIFF, JPEG, PSD, AI, PNG, EPS and PDF. Images sent on disc should be uncompressed and have a resolution of at least 300 dots per inch. Logos and line art are best supplied at 600dpi. We can also accept DWG files for plotting. If your image is small it may be difficult to enlarge to a bigger size. Images lifted from the internet or heavily compressed for emailing are often created at 72dpi and are generally not acceptable. File size checklist : To ensure acceptable digital images when scanning check the output file size is in line with the examples below - remember to set resolution to 300dpi. These files should then be saved as High or Maximum quality Jpegs if you are planning to send them to us by email. After scanning the file size can be found by highlighting the unopened file and right clicking to select Properties (Windows) or Get Info (Mac). If your file is much over 5mb in size we may ask you to send it on disc. Colour Files scanner data size 4" x 6" (100 x 150mm) - 6.17mb A5 - 12.4mb A4 - 24.88mb Greyscale Files scanner data size 4" x 6" (100 x 150mm) - 2.05mb A5 - 4.13mb A4 - 8.29mb Jpegs are compressed files and will be smaller in data size than the examples above. Generally Jpeg images between 2 - 5mb will yield acceptable results, depending on the size of the product that you require - remember, the larger the final size of the artwork, the larger the file needed to generate it and give reasonable detail. The Black and White setting in scanner software is not usually acceptable for photographs or images with a variety of tones. If in doubt about a monochrome image always use the Grayscale setting. If in doubt, contact us for advice. The quality of the final result depends greatly on the image you supply and care spent at this stage will be reflected in your final product. Supplying hard copy images We are able to scan your original images from paper, film, or transparencies/slides for inclusion into a design. If you are in doubt about the suitability of your picture or you are unable to scan it then sending it to us is the best way to proceed. Pack your original carefully, preferably flat and between two sheets of stiff card, and consider using a padded envelope too. Film and slides should be suitably protected from potential damage in transit by using a box or the original negative folder. We will return your original(s) undamaged. Image restoration We will do our best to incorporate your image(s) and present them to their best advantage. However, if the picture needs a lot of work to make it presentable it may incur an additional charge for restoration. Our designers are experienced in rescuing damaged images and can often make them useable. If your image is old or damaged please contact us for advice before submitting it to us. Copyright It is important that you have the right to use and reproduce the image(s) and we accept them on the basis that this is the case. We reserve the right to refuse to use an image that appears to infringe copyright, or may request written confirmation that you are the copyroght holder, or have consent to use it from the rights holder. We will not be held responsible for copyright infringement problems arising from images submitted to us. If you are in doubt about any of the above points please feel free to contact us and we will be happy to give further advice.
